Understanding Dry Eye
Dry eye is an increasingly common condition across all ages that is caused by a tear deficiency, which can result in dry, irritated eyes.
Your tears are made up of 3 layers; fatty oils, aqueous fluid, and mucus. This combination keeps the eyes hydrated and smooth, but if there’s an issue with your eye’s ability to produce all 3 layers, it can lead to dry eye symptoms.
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the main cause of dry eye symptoms in 80% of patients.
MGD causes oil to get trapped or clogged in the glands, allowing your tears to evaporate much faster than they should. Fortunately, there are many treatments available to help alleviate your dry eye symptoms.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
Intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) is an in-office treatment that uses pulses of light to reduce inflammation around the eyes and stimulate oil production in the meibomian glands.
Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are small devices that are placed in your tear ducts to prevent tear drainage and maintain surface moisture in the eyes.
Meibomian Gland Expression
Your optometrist may perform meibomian gland expression along with other treatments to help release trapped or clogged oils in the meibomian glands. This process involves your optometrist gently massaging the area around your glands to help stimulate the release of these oils.
